Maruti Suzuki Baleno Exterior
The Baleno as we all know is a premium offering from Maruti and thus is positioned above the Swift hatchback. The Baleno os definitely bigger in dimension than the existing Swift but it is actually lighter than the existing hatchback, the reason behind the lower weight of the hatchback is the new lightweight platform. The Baleno is based on a completely new platform which as promised has increased the hatches rigidity and decreased the overall weight making the hatchback lighter which will definitely prove beneficial not only for its handling but also fuel efficiency.
Now we all are also aware of the fact that the exterior of the new Baleno has been inspired from the ik-2 concept which was actually showcased for the first time at the 2015 Geneva Motor show.
The styling is definitely not extraordinary but the exterior highlights such as the new V shaped front grille completed with a chromed lower tip, projector headlamps (available nonly with the top sped variants the rest gets halogen headlamps as standard) towards the front placed inside stretched back headlamp cluster surely redefines the whole front face of the hatchback. The LED Daytime running lamps positioned inside the headlamp cluster as well helps in enhancing the overall appeal. The Baleno also received a bigger air inlet towards the lower front bumper which gives the hatch some sporty appearance.
Towards the side profile Suzuki’s new “Liquid Flow” design theme has been clearly highlighted, the side profile gets blacked out pillars which adds a touch of sophistication and increases the premium quotient of the hatchback. We can also notice chrome door handles and even a roof spoiler towards the rear spoiler. The Baleno has been offered with a 15 inch and a 16 inch alloy wheels (depending on the different variant). Towards the rear things looks subtle while the only highlight being the LED taillamps and a chrome finished rear strip.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Interior
The Baleno gets a new blacked out dashboard which is highlighted by those curvy and flowing lines, furthermore the dashboard gets touches of silver accents which seems to have worked in favor of the hatchback. The instrument cluster gets a high definition LCD screen which shows plenty of information apart from the speedometer and rpm meter.
Towards the center of the dash there is a big 7 inch LCD display which displays the infotainment features. The Baleno gets Smartphone Linkage Display Audio compatible with Apple CarPlay. This display also doubles up as a rear view camera display while backing up the vehicle. The infotainment has various others function as well the LCD screen also highlights the automatic air conditioner controls.
The seat in particular looks comfortable and according to Suzuki the rear seats provide generous shoulder room and plenty of legroom. The Suzuki baleno also provides a class leading luggage space of 339 Litres which is quite impressive considering the fact that this is only a B segment hatchback. The top end variant gets a SmartPlay infotainment with Apple CarPlay which will also be segment first feature apart from that it will also come equipped with navigation system and voice command system. The display screen will also act as reverse camera which will help in reversing the hatchback safely. The Baleno will also come with 60:40 split seats.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Performance
The Baleno’s most-selling engine will be the petrol, which is a 1.2-litre K-Series engine that churns about 82bhp of power and comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT (continuously variable transmission). This is a gem of a petrol engine and it has already been doing the magic on the Swift already. The drivability of the manual is good and one doesn’t requires to shift gears even in city traffic. The power is very much linear and the throttle response is also good. To overtake isn’t very difficult, but at times one needs to downshift. Drive it in city or on the highway, it is very convenient. We haven’t driven much in the city, but it is certainly not that difficult. We shall soon get our hands on the Baleno and take it for a longer drive in the near future.
The diesel on the other hand is a 1.3-litre DDiS that churns about 75bhp of power and 190Nm of maximum torque. The diesel again has minimal lag and this is one of the biggest USPs of both the Baleno engines. The engineering team of Maruti has stated that it has worked on the NVH levels of the Baleno, however it is still a bit loud at high speeds. It isn’t the clatter, but the harshness sound. The only downside of this engine. We are nitpicking complains as Maruti has left no room for us to point out the issues with this premium hatchback. The Japanese automaker has gone a good job with the Baleno and it does feel smooth to drive and it doesn’t even feel jittery up to speeds of 120km/hr. Overtaking is a breeze in the diesel engine, while the gearbox is wee bit notchy. Despite pushing the Baleno, our mileage was constantly above 15km/l.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno mileage according to the ARAI mileage certification touches 13 kmpl in the city and 16 kmpl on the highways for the petrol variant, and 16 kmpl in city streets and 22 kmpl on the highways as far as the diesel model is concerned. Where the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Facelift automatic variant CVT is concerned, it returns an acclaimed mileage of 11 kmpl in the city streets and 14 kmpl on the highways.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Driving
The ride of the Baleno car is very good. We have only driven the 195/55R16 (top-of-the-line variant) and yet to experience the other variant that comes shod with smaller tyres. But the ride will more of less remain the same. The suspension absorbs all the bumps with ease making it a smooth ride. On the other hand, the handling of the Baleno is just more evolved than the Swift. The alacrity of the chassis is a lot more superior to the other Maruti products thanks to the lighter weight chassis. This not just enhances the power and efficiency, but also improves the driving dynamics. The steering wheel too is light and feels comfortable to drive in city. It does weigh up a bit making it a joy to drive on the highways too.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Safety
For the first time, Maruti Suzuki Baleno Facelift features the revolutionary “HEARTECT” platform and assures extra safety for its passengers. The high tensile steel present in Baleno helps in improving the overall safety by making the body much stronger and rigid. The front disc brakes and the rear drum brakes provide stopping power to its axles. The safety features of the new Maruti Suzuki Baleno include ABS with EBD, dual airbags, pre-tensioner, ISOFIX child restraint system, speed alert system, brake assist and force limiter seatbelts with reminder, and rear parking sensors come standard across all variants.
